What is a Periodontist? Chicago
Do you require a periodontist? You are not alone. Hundreds of patients have been to the periodontist for one reason or another. Let’s take you through the basics you need to know about periodontics.
What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a specialized dentist who deals with periodontics. Periodontics can be defined as a special branch of dentistry that handles matters relating to the gums and jawbone, and the tissues involved.
Periodontists usually receive extra training for 3 years after completing dental school. This training equips them to handle moderate to severe cases of gum disease and related problems such as bone loss and receding gums.
Why see a Periodontist?
There are several reasons why someone would need to see a periodontist. In some cases, it is only temporary, to do an evaluation or treatment that couldn’t possibly be done by your regular dentist. In other cases, you may need to see a periodontist in the long term especially if you have chronic gum disease or you have a lifestyle habit that exposes you to periodontitis. In this case, you will need to have regular checkups with your dentist and periodontist to maintain your oral health.
Here are some possible reasons your general dentist might refer you to a periodontist to receive specialized treatment:
- You have the symptoms of gum disease such as:
- Bleeding, swollen, painful, or receding gums
- Loose teeth
- Bite problems
- Family history of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, or cancer
- You are a heavy smoker
- You require an advanced dental implant procedure
