connective tissue graft

Connective Tissue Graft Causes | Chicago

Connective tissue grafts are a common type of gum tissue grafts primarily used to treat gum recession. Healthy teeth require healthy gum tissue and bone. When gum recession occurs, the root of the tooth gets exposed leading to one of the forms of periodontal disease. Gum recession may lead to tooth loss or dental implant failure which is why we perform connective tissue grafts to repair the gums and avoid further complications.

Connective tissue graft involves placing a piece of donor tissue onto the effected site. We use the acellular dermal matrix technique. This technique involves using donor tissue supplied by another human. The cadaver donor tissue is processed according to FDA standards.

During the processing, all cells are completely removed from the donor tissue to make them acellular so that no disease can be passed from the donor tissue to the recipient site. We mostly use this procedure on our patients because it is the only one that avoids having two surgery sites inside the mouth of the patient.

Connective tissue graft can be caused by:

  • Gum and bone disease (periodontal disease)
  • Forceful tooth brushing or flossing
  • Traumatic injury
  • Orthodontic movement of teeth (braces or aligners)
  • Previous oral surgery, such as dental extractions
  • Treatment for oral pathology, including head and neck cancer
  • Loss of teeth at an early age
  • Systemic disease (e.g., diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus)
